Seattle, Vancouver, 510(k)'s, and Thunder

The last two weeks have been busy. The Wasatch has recieved over 160" of snow but an impending 510(k) FDA submission at work, and a trip to interview at my top 2 choices for Mechanical Engineering Graduate Programs, Unviersity of Washington in Seattle, and University of British Columbia in Vancouver, have limited my skiing to pre-dawn turns and weekend gaunts.

The Sliver

The Wasatch has been getting POUNDED the over the last week and a half. since March 22, we've had almost 100" of snow with 8" of water....with another 2 footer hitting us today. I've been able to dawn patrol quite a bit, but don't have many photos other than the traditional skin-track in the dark or greybird shot......so here's a few from when Andy Burr and I got out and skied the Sliver before this whole system moved in.

All Photos by Andrew Burr or from my cell phone.

Cold Fusion Research

In an effort to secure funding for alternative energy research, our group of 4 (Xover, Dantheman, DTM's dad, and I) headed towards the Cold Fusion Research facility of North Timpanogos.

El Leon de Marzo

Boy March fooled everyone didn't it? Last week my forehead was peeling from touring in 50 degree weather. I farmed perfect corn in Hogum Fork after skiing the Sliver on Saturday.

And then this week came and WAM!!!!!!!

We've had over 40" of snow this week and the highest avalanche danger of the season today.

Suicide Sunrise

I was able to squeeze in a lap on Suicide Chute this moring with Steve Lloyd before heading into work for the day. My initial objectives were just to stretch my legs and get some blood moving. I didn't have high expectations for the quality of skiing due to the high temps we've had over the last few days.

Hallway and Reed & Benson Couloirs

My brother Stephen and I headed out today with the objective of sking the Hallway and "Reed & Benson" Couloirs. Our goal was to approach them from Little Cottonwood, and skin back out to Little Cottonwood. The weather was forecasted to be partly cloudy with another cold front moving later in the day. We started a little later in the morning, not too worried about getting up for the sunrise. Check out the video at the bottom.

Soul Skinning

I need to thank Radiohead for distracting me from the horendous conditions we skinned up to Davenport Hill in today. 70 degrees in the valley, 45 degrees at the base of Alta at 5:00 a.m. It's hard to keep faith that this isn't the start of spring.

I have also tried to make a habit of taking off my skins with my skis still attached to my feet ever since I had a ski run off on me down Hellgate a few weeks ago.

Las Vegas

Last week I had a chance to present some research of mine at the Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS) in Las Vegas.

It was pretty incredible how much research in the Orthopaedic industry is taking place. There were over 2,000 abstracts presented. I was pretty humbled to be there (being a meeger undergrad....). I also had a chance to check out the AAOS tradeshow in the last day. It pu thte OR Tradeshow to shame......the booths were HUGE! Anyway, here are a few pics of my posters, and my first time in Vegas.

Spontaneous Combustion

Spontaneous human combustion (SHC) is the burning of the human body without an external source of ignition. As it is an unproven natural phenomenon, there is much speculation and controversy regarding SHC. In most cases, a small shrunken skull, part of a leg(s) (with the clothing still on,) or sometimes both are found in the remains of the person thought to have combusted.

In this case.....it is thought that recent storms caused SHC.

Pow Pow Pow

We've had an amazing few days in Utah. The last two of them, I spent shooting with Jonathan Gurry and Tough Guy Productions.

We had some chilly mornings....but also some of the deepest turns in recent memory.
