The Sliver
The Wasatch has been getting POUNDED the over the last week and a half. since March 22, we've had almost 100" of snow with 8" of water....with another 2 footer hitting us today. I've been able to dawn patrol quite a bit, but don't have many photos other than the traditional skin-track in the dark or greybird shot......so here's a few from when Andy Burr and I got out and skied the Sliver before this whole system moved in.
All Photos by Andrew Burr or from my cell phone.
In all my years hiking in the Wasatch, I've always found a way to by-pass hiking the Y-Couloir. I have many friends that have taken rides in it, and I've never been drawn to ski it. But on this day, it seemed like a more efficient option than skinning in from White-Pine or going up Coalpit drainage and wading through the waterfall that isn't covered like it was last year.
Our initial goal was to ski the Dresden Face and then the Sliver. We started at hiking around 6 am.

Me at the stream crossing.

We skinned up to the first band of rocks in the Y and began the booter. The old booter had melted in on itself and it was slow going, sinking up to our boot-tops in slush.

A view of Coalpit from the top of the Y. It wasn't nearly as efficient as I thought it'd be. I think I'll opt to stay on my skins as long as possible from now on.

It was kind of nice to look at...

Once on top of Coalpit, Dresden was looking pretty wet. Not wanting to go for a ride, we opted to skin a quarter mile along Thunder Ridge till we go to the Sliver. We haven't had quite the same snow year as the shot of the Sliver on the Chuting Gallery, so no Mark Holbrook impressions for us this year. Some tight jump turns at the top turned into longer ones near the bottom. It was bigger than I expected having seen it from the Pfeiferhorn.

Feeling small in Hogum.......

And farming PERFECT corn on the exit.

So now we need to got back and nail Dresden (& possibly Montgomery), once we've exhausted all the pow that doesn't seem to end.
